Japan's recent natural disasters have caused "significant damage" to breweries in the country, beer industry research experts have been told.
On Friday March 11th, an 9.0-magnitude earthquake hit off the north-east coast of the country, triggering a tsunami which has devastated northern regions.
Beverage Daily reported that Asahi Breweries – the biggest Japanese brewer by volume – has confirmed that production has stopped at its sites in Fukushima and Ibaraki as a result of the catastrophe.
In addition, the company has reduced output by 50 per cent at the Kanagawa facility, as a result of rolling blackouts.
Kirin Breweries' Sendai plant has halted production as a result of damaged storage tanks, which an will reduce the firm's Japanese-based output by an estimated ten per cent.
Meanwhile, Nomura has announced that its Chiba and Sendai factories are closed, accounting for around 40 per cent of the company's output, while Sapporo Breweries' network of plants has been significantly impacted.
As the crisis continues to unfold, there are no indications as to when brewing at the affected facilities will resume.
